About Speaker Marcus Luttrell
What is the true measure of a man? Is it how he lives? How he treats others? How he handles hardship and challenges? Keynote Speaker Marcus Luttrell stands tall as a man of faith, principle and unwavering resolve. His story and those of the other Navy SEALs involved in the harrowing Operation Red Wing were the inspiration behind the 2014 award-winning film Lone Survivor starring Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell. Marcus is now a bestselling author, motivational speaker, podcast host and founder of the Lone Survivor Foundation.
Marcus and his twin brother Morgan began training for the Navy SEALs at just 14-years-old. They attended Sam Houston State University together and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1999. Marcus suffered a fractured femur early in his training but was undeterred. He graduated from SEALs basic training just over a year later. His initial specification was in emergency medicine and battlefield life support. His first SEAL deployment was to Iraq during the U.S. invasion in 2003. Marcus went on a number of missions to locate WMDs and capture or eliminate terrorist threats.
His second deployment was to Afghanistan in 2005. A deployment he’ll never forget. Marcus and 3 other SEALs were sent on a reconnaissance mission to kill or capture a known terrorist, Ahmad Shah. Things went south quickly when a group of goat herders stumbled upon the SEALs camp. Marcus and his team decided to let them go despite the fact they could compromise their position with the enemy. An hour later the SEALs team found themselves in a heavy gun battle and Marcus was the only survivor of the attack by local terrorists. Severely wounded, Marcus made his escape 7 miles when he was given shelter by a local Afghan tribe. 6 days later U.S. forces rescued Marcus and he endured months of recovery. Marcus completed one more tour before being medically discharged in 2007.
One of our favorite quotes from Marcus is, “Fear is a force that sharpens your senses. Being afraid is a state of paralysis in which you can’t do anything.” Do we use fear as fuel, or allow it to control and cripple us? The fear we face may not be in life or death situations, but how we learn to cope and use fear as a motivator plays an important role in our personal and professional lives.
Today, Marcus uses his voice as the host of the Team Never Quit Podcast. He interviews guests from all walks of life who share their greatest never quit stories to inspire others. He is the author of two bestselling books, Lone Survivor and Service. His Lone Survivor Foundation provides support for wounded soldiers, veterans and their families.
