About Speaker Andrew Cuomo
Keynote Speaker Andrew Cuomo was born to be in politics. His father, the late Mario Cuomo, was a respected Governor of New York for 3 terms before Andrew took over as Governor in 2011. Andrew is the older brother of CNN personality Chris Cuomo and radiologist Margaret Cuomo. In 2020, Andrew found himself at the epicenter of the Coronavirus pandemic in the United States. He has been a thought leader for U.S. Coronavirus response and strongly advocated to give his state the resources they need to quell and defeat the virus in the most efficient way possible. Andrew stands out as a voice of courage and wisdom during a very tumultuous time in American history.
Andrew’s political contributions to America have come in a number of different areas. His main focus has been to create action groups and legislation that protects and insulates the American people and its economy. He has been a proponent of stricter gun laws, fighting climate change, expanding Medicaid, creating wage equality, as well as legalizing medical marijuana among other efforts.
Andrew graduated from law school in 1982. He got his first real taste of politics as campaign manager for his father’s first successful campaign for Governor of New York. Andrew spent the next several years working in a law firm before founding the Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged (HELP). He left the law firm in 1988 to run HELP full time. In the early 90’s, he got more involved in the state’s political agenda heading up the New York Homeless Commission.
His first major roll in U.S. politics came in 1993. Then President Bill Clinton named him Assistant Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He ascended to Secretary of HUD in 1997, working until the end of Clinton’s second term in 2001. Andrew tested the waters in a campaign for NY Governor in 2002 but ultimately withdrew from the race. He won the nomination in 2006 and has served as the Governor of New York ever since.
Outside of the political office, Andrew is the author of 2 books. The first released in 2003 called Crossroads: The Future of American Politics. His second book, All Things Possible: Setbacks and Success in Politics and Life, was released in 2014.
